Project Overview

The delivery of the $187.5 million Spoilbank Marina has created a vibrant new amenity for the Port Hedland community and visitors to enjoy. It also improves access and safety for recreational boaters.

The project was managed and delivered by Pilbara Ports, in collaboration with the Department of TransportDevelopmentWAPilbara Development CommissionBHP and the Town of Port Hedland.  The project was funded by the State Government, the Town of Port Hedland and BHP.

Pilbara Ports awarded Ertech the sixth and final major contract, which included the landslide civils and landscaping on the Spoilbank Marina project.

Ertech’s scope of work included the installation of utilities and services, construction of the marina roads, car and trailer parking, carparks, footpaths, retaining walls, public amenity building, shade structures, barbecue areas, and extensive landscaping and irrigation works.

Ertech’s electrical team was engaged to complete the electrical distribution network, including a new site main switchboard fed from a new substation (substation by Horizon Power) and electrical reticulation to all new and existing buildings and facilities at the site. Additional scope items include external and feature lighting, CCTV systems and NBN infrastructure.

This outstanding community infrastructure project was delivered in readiness for the official opening in November 2024.

Scope of works

Stage 2 comprised the construction of the marina and associated land-side infrastructure and amenities delivered as five works packages, as follows:

  • #2a – Bulk Earthworks
  • #2b – Dredging
  • #2c – Breakwaters and Revetments
  • #3a – Marine Structures
  • #4a – Civil and Landscaping

Ertech was engaged to deliver package #4:

  • Perform detailed earthworks, including cut and fill, to achieve design subgrade levels
  • Install utilities, services, and infrastructure, including gravity sewer, potable water main, fire water system, reticulation, electrical distribution network (switchboards and reticulation), CCTV and NBN
  • Construct roads, carparks, stormwater infrastructure, concrete paths, kerbs, and medians
  • Install decorative concrete and rammed earth retaining walls
  • Construct a public amenities building
  • Fabricate and install shade structures and other marina infrastructure
  • Demolish existing services and structures
  • Import and install bespoke European urban concrete furniture
  • Install hard and soft landscaping, including tree planting, strata cells and irrigation
  • Install street furniture, signage and pavement markings
  • Undertake final testing and commissioning

Electrical Scope of Work

Ertech’s in-house electrical team planned and implemented all electrical works, including engagement with specialist subcontractors and the procurement of long lead time items, including 14 differing electrical switchboards.

The scope of the electrical works included:

  • Upgrade the electrical distribution network, including installing a new main switchboard fed from a new substation. Works included installing six new distribution boards and one new site main switchboard
  • Electrical reticulation to all new and existing buildings and facilities at the site
  • Install all new external, street and feature lighting
  • Install CCTV system, including a fibre optic communications network, cameras, poles, wireless links, and active equipment
  • Install NBN pit and pipe network
  • Undertake the final testing and commissioning of electrical systems
