The carpark on the northern side of the Marmion Angling and Aquatic Club (MAAC) underwent a major redesign which improved accessibility to the beach and upgraded the parking capacity from 42 to 82 bay

Scope

Ertech’s scope of works included:

  • Importing and placing fill to construction level
  • Clearing the existing car park and modifying ground sub-base to new levels
  • Installation of soak wells
  • Design and construction of a permanent soil nail retention wall to enable the extension to the eastern side of the carpark adjacent to West Coast Drive
  • Installation of 30 X 400mm diameter foundation piles which were designed to support the loadings of the reinforced concrete cantilever deck. The piles were drilled into bedrock at a depth of 10m to accommodate the design loadings
  • Supply and installation of 15 X 8m precast concrete beams
  • Construction of 25m of insitu pile capping beam
  • Construction of a concrete-filled reinforcement blockwork retaining wall with precast concrete stair supports
  • Supply and installation of 57 X 5m Hollowcore slabs
  • Construction of 90m of insitu balustrade wall
  • Construction of a piled support structure for cantilevered ground slab beams
  • Installation of buried services - hydraulic and electrical
  • Preparing the concrete pad and extending the water supply from the MAAC building to the new shower

The tight working area - bordered by West Coast Drive, the MAAC and the ocean - meant that effective planning was integral to executing the works safely and efficiently.

This project was the winner of the 2016 CCF Earth Award (Category 2). It was recognised for its innovative solution, benefit to the client and the minimal impact of the works on adjacent neighbours and the public.
